SAN SEBASTIÁN
The grand finale
The final stop is San Sebastián, jewel of the
Basque Country. Its La Concha beach, its old
town full of pintxo bars, and the Peine del Vien-
to, a work by Eduardo Chillida, bid farewell to
the traveller with a blend of flavours, art, and
sea views that linger in the memory. This city,
elevated to international fame by Queen Re-
gent María Cristina of Habsburg—who esta-
blished the royal summer court here—never
fails to dazzle with its elegance and aristocra-
tic charm. It was the “wave baths” of that era,
when swimsuits covered the entire body, that
brought the city such renown.
We are, truthfully, overcome with sadness: the
journey ends, the chucu chucu chu of the
train has faded, and it is time to say goodbye
to the friends we’ve made on this unforgetta-
ble trip, as well as to the staff who looked af-
ter us with such care. But we still have a few
hours—perhaps even an extra day—to enjoy
this beautiful city, the final stop of this unforge-
ttable “Cantabrian experience.
